Gosling, 1723, viii 148 pp. plus 4-page index) together with “The Names of the Roman Catholics, Nonjurors, and Others, who refus’d to take the Oaths to his late Majesty King George. Together with Their Titles, Additions, and Places of Abode; the parishes and Townships where their Land lay; the Names of the then Tenants, or Occupiers thereof; and the Annual Valuation of them, as estimated by themselves. Transmitted to the late Commissioners for the Forfeited Estates of England and Wales, after the Unnatural Rebellion in the North, in the Year 1715. Forman (1928-2005) was a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Black Panthers, and Detroit’s Black Economic Development Conference, for which he authored the “Black Manifesto” that, in part, demanded reparations from white churches for injustices suffered by African Americans. Viera was a member of the Republic of New Afrika (RNA) that advocated for the creation of an independent African-American-majority country within the United States. He was charged, tried and acquitted of murdering a policeman in 1969 during the first New Afrikan Nation Day Celebration at the New Bethel Baptist Church, on the West Side of Detroit. The caption reads: “10/30/70 – DETROIT: Rafael Viera, 22, co-defendant in the New Bethel trial with Clarence J. Fuller, who was stabbed to death 10/26, said 10/29 at a news conference that two recent attempts had been made on his life. Viera and Fuller were charged in the rifle shooting 3/29/69 of two Detroit policemen, Michael Czapski, who was killed, and Richard Worobec, who was wounded, outside of Detroit’s New Bethel Baptist Church. Both Viera and Fuller were acquitted of the charges 6/15/70. Viera said 10/29 that gunmen had shot at him on a New York City street and again in his New York apartment.” $45.00

A wonderful collection of bookseller labels from the Netherlands, primarily from the early- to mid-1900s, with a few marks from the late 19th Century, and a few modern examples. Arranged alphabetically by city (Aalsmeer, Aalten, Almelo, Amersfoort, Amstelveen, Amsterdam … Zeist, Zutphen, Zwolle), then by shop or surname (Felix P. Abrahamson, Abrahamson & Van Straaten, J.M. Alles, Boekhandel Ambon, Apollo Boekhandel, De Arbeiderspers, Barends’ Boekhandel…). After the last label (J.M.W. Waanders of Zwolle), there are about fifty oversized marks. Totaling 550 labels, there are no duplicates—though some labels only differ because of minor differences in color or font. The vast majority are in very good used condition, with some fine, unused labels and fewer than two dozen that show heavy wear, chips or small tears. The interior is clean and bright with no marks. The dust jacket has light edge wear with a couple of tiny closed edge tears, very light scuffing here and there, and some wrinkling at the head of the spine panel. Heavily-illustrated, this is one of the most in-depth presentations of the artistic and social developments of murals. Included is a wonderful press image of a graffiti mural featuring Che Guevara in Chicago (see this list’s cover image). The print measures 26 by 20.2 cm and has several notes, dates and a press caption affixed to the back with some light creases and wear (Chicago Sun-Times, 1980). Also included is a 1985 flyer promoting an open house to benefit the painting of “A New Revolutionary Mural” by Susan Greene on the front of The Socialist Bookstore in San Francisco: “it will celebrate the struggles of working people and the oppressed around the world.”ť The benefit featured the author of this book, Alan Barnett, and his slide show on “Recent Liberation Art of Latin America.
