London: Printed for Richard Phillips, 1810. Half-leather, 15 by 23.2 cm, xvi 901 pp. plus three pages of ads. Rebound with hand-marbled paper over calf spine and corners with leather spine label (“A New Family Herbal – Bewick”) and gilt spine titles and decorations. Lacks original endpapers, but otherwise complete with half-title, title, etc. Each entry includes an illustration “drawn from nature, by Henderson, and engraved on wook, by Thomas Bewick.” Binding is fine. Light foxing throughout the textblock with a few light dampstains here and there. Thumb-sized chip missing from the bottom, gutter-edge of the title page. With a content table of common names, this herbal relates the description, history and medical virtues of over two hundred species. Descriptions of some plants, for instance the Common Cinquefoil (which is a weak astringent) are only a page in length including the engraved illustration, while other plants are covered in much more detail – the White Poppy stretches to twenty-six pages; “The action of opium on the living system has been the subject of the keenest controversy…” A stunning volume of practical information illustrated by the master of wood engraving and author of A History of British Birds. (case) First Edition.
