2 Kane, Elisha Kent Arctic Explorations in the Years 1853, ’54, ’55, Vols. I & II
Philadelphia Childs and Peterson 1856 Leather_bound Very Good
Two volumes, complete. Three-quarter leather, green morocco over marbled paper, five raised spine bands with bright gilt spine titles, marbled endpaper, all edges speckled, 15 by 22.3 cm, Vol. 1 includes an engraved frontis of the author, engraved title page, a fold-out map depicting “discoveries of the second American Grinnell expedition,” 462 pp.; Vol. II includes an engraved frontis of Henry Grinnell, engraved title page, a fold-out chart depicting the isothermal lines of Baffin Bay, 467 pp., “illustrated by upwards of three hundred [steel and wood] engravings from sketches by the author.” The first volume has a few small abrasions on the spine and faint corner wear, a previous owner’s name stamp in the top margin of the title page, and a few small tears and creases to the fold-out map; this volume has damp stains that run along the top and bottom margins of the front matter, and the top margins of most of the book, as well as a few small stains her and there – the damp stains have not affected the binding. The second volume has a few small abrasions on the spine and faint corner wear, a previous owner’s name stamp in the top margin of the title page, and tears to the fold-out chart with old repairs; there is a small amount of damp-staining in the margins of the front matter only, with a few small stains within the text, and wrinkles and 4 cm fore edge tear to pages 441-446. Rather minor defects in what is otherwise a very attractive set. Elisha Kent Kane (1820-1857) was an American explorer and a medical officer in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of two Arctic expeditions to rescue the explorer Sir John Franklin. He was present at the discovery of Franklin's first winter camp, but he did not find out what had happened to the fatal expedition. Henry Grinnell (1799-1874) was the American merchant and philanthropist who financed the expeditions. First Edition.
