Transmitted to the late Commissioners for the Forfeited Estates of England and Wales, after the Unnatural Rebellion in the North, in the Year 1715. As appears by the returns of the clerks of the peace for the several counties, pursuant to an Act of Parliament made for Registering their Estates, in the First Year of the Reign of his said late Majesty. Taken from an original manuscript of a Gentleman, who was the Principal Clerk to the Accomptant General’s Office, belonging to the said Commissioners. And now Published with a Generous View to promote and serve the true Protestant Interest of these Kingdoms” (London: J. Robinson, 1745, (6) 151 pp.). Full blind-stamped calf with leather and gilt spine label, 13 by 21.7 cm. Near fine. The Growth of Working Class Reformism in Mid-Victorian England, Kirk, Neville
8 Kirk, Neville The Growth of Working Class Reformism in Mid-Victorian England
Champaign, IL University of Illinois Press 1985 Hardcover Near Fine very good
Hardcover with dust jacket, black cloth with gilt spine titles, 14 by 22 cm, xiii 369 pp. Near fine hardcover in a very good jacket with sun fading on the spine panel. No writing, highlighting, names, or other markings. The dust jacket is in a fresh mylar cover. “The post-chartist period saw an easing of class tensions and the growth of a reformist working class. Using evidence based upon the cotton districts of Northwest England, the author shows that enhanced socio-political stability owed much to economic re-stabilization. This book examines new and neglected areas of investigation, including the interplay between class and ethnicity and the institutional and sociological roots of reformism, and brings fresh evidence to bear upon more familiar areas of debate, such as trends in living standards. A materialist explanation of reformism instability is propounded. Central importance is attached to the notion of an increasingly fragmented working class operating in a secure economic system which offered enhanced scope for class maneuver and labor's advancement. The working class did not become Incorporated, collaborationist, or deferential. The frequency of class struggle and continued working class independence could not, however, conceal the fact that the broad features of the system has been accepted. Piecemeal advancement became the order of the day.” We ship our books in boxes or cardboard wraps, never in bags.
