The Sumac Reader, Bednarik, Joseph, editor; Dan Gerber and Jim Harrison, intros.
4 Bednarik, Joseph, editor; Dan Gerber and Jim Harrison, intros. The Sumac Reader
East Lansing MSU Press 1997 0870133272 Limited ed Hardcover Fine Signed
Bednarik, Joseph, editor; Dan Gerber and Jim Harrison, intros. The Sumac Reader. East Lansing, Michigan: Michigan State University Press, 1997, first printing, limited edition of twenty-six copies lettered A – Z, this being V, and signed on the half-title by Harrison, Gerber and Bednarik. Fine, unread copy. Hardcover, no jacket as issued, green paper over brown faux leather spine with gilt spine titles and gilt Sumac Press owl logo on front cover, 14.4 by 22.2 cm, xix 238 pp. plus index. Sumac was a Fremont Michigan-based literary journal founded in 1968 by poets Dan Gerber and Jim Harrison; novelist Thomas McGuane joined the editorial staff in 1969 as the fiction editor. When the inaugural issue appeared, more than 250 American literary magazines were listed in The Directory of Magazines and Small Presses; within three years, Sumac rose to the first tier of these publications and was nationally recognized for its eclecticism and editorial quality. Library Journal called it "one of the best little magazines now being published." As a publisher, The Sumac Press published works by Gerber, Harrison, Yvan Goll, Clayton Eshleman, Michael Heller, and a host of others. This volume, quoting the publisher, “is an anthology that contains poetry, experimental fiction, and works in translation that originally appeared in the magazine. Contributors include four Pulitzer Prize-winning poets—Galway Kinnell, Charles Simic, Louis Simpson, and Gary Snyder—along with Paul Blackburn, Hayden Carruth, Richard Hugo, Denise Levertov, Ezra Pound, Adrienne Rich, and Diane Wakoski. There are early poems by Charles Simic, James Tate, and Michael Waters, as well as a complete section from Galaway Kinnell's classic, ‘The Book of Nightmares.’ Fiction is represented in Sumac by a first-published Jim Heyden story ‘Coyote’ and early prose by William Kittredge. Translations from Chinese, French, Spanish, and Russian bring to American readers the work of masters such as Tu Fu, Lorca, and Li Po. A variety of poetic forms are represented, including ghazals, narratives, suites, found poems, and the freest of free verse.” A fine copy of a scarce limited edition. (case) First Edition.

A Collection of Works by Judith Minty, All Signed. This collection includes signed first editions of eight of Judith Minty’s books, and six other publications in which she was featured. Born in Detroit, Minty earned degrees from Ithaca College and Western Michigan University, and has maintained a Michigan home for most of her life, living on the shores of Lake Michigan and on the Yellow Dog River in the Upper Peninsula. Her first book of poetry won the United States Award of the International Poetry Forum and she has gone on to publish several full-length books of poetry and chapbooks, and her essays, prose and poetry has appeared in over fifty anthologies and journals. Along the way she has been awarded the Villa Montalvo Award for Excellence in Poetry and the Eunice Tiestiens Award from Poetry magazine, among other honors. Minty has taught at several universities, including the University of California, University of Alaska, Grand Valley State, and a decade-long stint as director of the Creative Writing Program at Humboldt State University. While throughout Minty’s work there is a strong sense of place, leaning heavily on the North Woods of Michigan, the Great Lakes, and California, it is Judith’s depiction of the reality of truth that has moved her well beyond the confines of a “regional poet” to the mantel of “Great Poet.” All the books included in this collection are SIGNED by Minty and all are free from writing or other marks. Included are: Counting the Losses. Aptos, California: Jazz Press, 1986. Staple-bound, card wraps. Near fine with light sun fading along spine; Dancing the Fault. Orlando: University of Central Florida Press, Contemporary Poetry Series, 1991, first printing. Hardcover with gilt spine and cover titles, no jacket as issued. Fine; In the Presence of Mothers. Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 1981, first printing. Hardcover with dust jacket. Mancelona, Michigan: Deep Wood Press, 2011, number 72 of a limited edition of 110 – “bound in boards with a dark brown Asahi bookcloth and brick Hahnemühle Burga paper” (an additional ten copies were bound in goat). Fine. Signed by Minty on the half-title page and the limitation page. Also signed by Chad Pastotnik , the printer/binder proprietor of Deep Wood Press, and Glenn Wolff who provided eight wood engravings. A beautifully produced volume. Not poetry, more of a dreamscape – “This came to me as if in a dream,” writes Minty in the preface, “ and I wrote it as I received it. It entered my consciousness like an aura, like a guide or protector, and its violence was shattering at the same time it enthralled me.” Foreword by Annie-Marie Oomen; Letters to My Daughters. Ann Arbor: Mayapple Press, 1980, first printing, limited edition of 700 copies. Staple-bound, card wraps. Fine; Lake Songs and Other Fears. Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 1974. Hardcover with dust jacket. The book would be near fine if the half-title page hadn’t been removed; the jacket has light rubbing, a couple of small nicks, and a 5cm slice on the front panel near the crease of the flap. Judith’s first book and winner of the 1973 United States Award of the International Poetry Forum; The Mad Painter Poems. Greensboro, North Carolina: March Street Press, 1996, first printing. Staple-bound, card wraps. Fine; Walking with the Bear. East Lansing: Michigan State University Press, 2000, first printing. Wraps, errata slip. Fine. “Walking with the Bear is an extraordinary collection,” writes Jim Harrison, “I was especially drawn to the new poems which seem to lift Judith into the very front rank of American Poetry.”; Dallman, Elaine, editor-in-chief. Woman Poet Volume Three: The Midwest. Reno, Nevada: Women-in-Literature, Inc., 1985, first printing. Hardcover with illustrated boards, no jacket as issued. Minor edge wear with a small scuff at the upper corner of the front cover. Chicago: Modern Poetry Association, March 1974, Volume 123, Number 6. Wraps. Light cover wear and sun fading on the spine. Includes five poems by Minty; Poetry, November 1974.
