An exceedingly rare copy of Cicero's "A Defence of Old Age" published by G.P. Putnams' Sons Knickerbocker Press (New York), 1911. This copy includes a steel-engraved bookplate produced by the American Bank Note Co. for Ambrose Swasey depicting the Lick Telescope. Ambrose Swasey (1846-1937) was an American mechanical engineer, inventor, astronomer, and philanthropist and he co-founded the Warner & Swasey Company. In addition to army ordinance contracts, the firm of Warner & Swasey became notable for their work on astronomical observatories and equipment and Swasey built the mount for the James Lick Telescope, a refracting 36-inch telescope built in 1889. It is the third-largest refracting telescope in the world and was the largest until 1897. It is located at the University of California's Lick Observatory atop Mount Hamilton at an elevation of 4,209 feet above sea level. This volume is three-quarter gilt-edged leather over cloth. The top edge of the textblock is gilt and the frontis features an engraving of a statue of Cicero. This copy is remarkably well preserved with only very minor spots of rubbing on the leather and a more lengthy scuff on the bottom corner of the back cover. On the bottom edge of the bookplate the date 1-25-30 is written in pen and a few small spots of the ink stained the facing endpaper. On the second free endpaper is the inscription: "For Dear Mr. Swasea with Christmas compliments of **** Rand, 1925" (I can't read the first name). There are two small, light brown spots on the fore edge of the textblock. The gilt spine titles are not worn and are nice and bright. The ribbon bookmarks is brittle and half torn near where it is attached. NOT ex-library. (case)
