Four volumes, complete, hardcovers with matte illustrated boards, 22.2 by 28.5 cm, not paginated (64 pp. ea.), heavily illustrated in full-color (though most of the images are in sepia or black and white). Very good with some light scuffing and marks to the matte finishes; some light corner bumps here and there, and rubbing at the foot of the spine on the X-Ray Era volume. No writing, highlighting, names, or other markings. I believe this set was originally issued with a slipcase (like Dr. Burns series on respiratory diseases), but it is not present. Burns, a New York physician, is a well-known collector of vintage medical photographs, with over 700,000 images in his collection. These volumes feature a selection of tumors and their treatment – all are striking, many are horrific. The images are full page, with full description facing the images, including Fever Therapy for Cancer, Adamantinoma of the Mandible, Inoperable Carcinoma of the Breast, Cancer of the Clitoris, Irish Boy with his Scapula, Hypertrophic Breasts, Young Girl Dead from Sturge-Weber Disease, Infection During the Civil War Era, Pre-Operative Rodent Cancer, etc. An impressive set whose publication was partially underwritten by AstraZeneca. We ship our books in boxes or cardboard wraps, never in bags. Bay Leaf Books (Member ABAA, ILAB) is dedicated to offering fine books for discriminating readers. First Edition.
