Davidson, Dr. W.M. The Secrets of Birth Control: Being a practical treatise on the needs and necessities of modern woman, exposing the fallacies and injuriousness of many prevalent practices, with a simple and easily understood explanation of the Natural Method of Birth Control constituted by the “Safe Period” the result of years of research by many eminent authorities in America and Europe. New York: The Eugenics Publishing Association, 1929. Staple-bound card wraps, 12 by 18.3 cm, 40 pp., two illus. Wraps have a few stains, fading along the top edge, and light wear; the textblock is near fine. This scarce eugenics publication features sections on the description of birth control, how women conceive, errors of contraception, the “safe period chart,” the “safe time,” how to pre-determine sex, how to overcome sterility, as well as moral lessons which are, at times, contradictory. The author speaks on the “humorous anomalies of our modern civilization that […] antiquated laws […] refuse women that freedom of choice whether she shall shall assume of the responsibilities of motherhood,” that there has “always been a certain measure of opposition to any practice of birth control on religious ground […] the outcome of a misguided fanaticism which is a really unable to comprehend the true workings of God and Nature,” and “that subtle crime against man and God — abortion.” The author also includes a handy chart delineating when the left and right ovaries are active, safe times, boy times and girl times.
