Brooke Shields (1965 –) was initially a child model and gained critical acclaim at age 12 for her leading role in Louis Malle's film Pretty Baby (1978), in which she played a child prostitute in New Orleans. Shields garnered widespread notoriety in the role, and she continued to model into her late teenage years and starred in several dramas in the 1980s, including The Blue Lagoon(1980), and Franco Zeffirelli's Endless Love (1981). Although, she’s still probably best known for her Calvin Klein print and TV ads with the famous tagline, "You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing" – she was 14 years old at the time. This volume, published when Brooke was 13, features short essays and poetry by Shields (“I love my cat / I love my bunny / I love my cat / for she’s my / honey.”), and opens with a copy of her birth certificate and some early childhood pics. This is followed by numerous images from her young career by “many of the world’s greatest photographers,” including Steve Mills, Frances Ing, Tadashi Endo, Gary Gross, and Francesco Scavullo, etc. Some of the images are a bit troubling, including pics in the tub, in lingerie, a cigarette in hand, and Lolita-style poses, and it was this hype that bolstered her career and legacy as a model, as well as tremendous interest in her home life and mother.
