Serex, E. Vintage Manuscript Album and Scrapbook on Egypt, Greece, Rome, with Sections on Gothic Architecture and Ornamentation and Saracenic Art. Unbranded, string-bound manufactured scrapbook binder, 21 by 27.3 cm, [146] pp. plus one blank leaf at the end, illus. Very good with light shelf wear to the boards and wear and chipping to the center fore edge of the back cover. Beyond a mere scrapbook of clippings, this impressive album includes in-depth, hand-written histories of Egypt, Greece and Rome, and their art and ornamentation. This album includes hand-lettered title pages, 36 hand-drawn illustrations in black ink that range from small embellishments to full-page drawings, 2 hand-drawn maps, 115 clippings from small embellishments to full-page images, and 2 color postcards. The only identification on this album is a small “E. Serex” is pencil on the bottom edge of the first leaf. Not dated, but a laid in new clipping on the Great Pyramid of Cheops from the Boston Globe is dated August 2, 1921. This text-heavy album is certainly that of an amateur, but someone that is beyond the days of school projects. It is a labor of true interest in the subject and covering a wide range of subjects from Egyptian art, the Rosetta Stone, Greek gods, Egyptian beetles, the Acropolis, mosaics, geography, Gothic cathedrals, and much more.
