Walker, Brian. A Series of Hand-Written Letters from Cycling Artist and Author Brian Walker. From the archive of On The Wheel magazine, a series of seven letters dated from January to September of 1999, comprising twenty pages of hand-written text. Five of the letters have the original envelopes. Walker, a well-known technical illustrator and children’s book illustrator, was also known for his drawings of bicycles, cyclo-touring scenes, and his touring stories, many of which appeared in the pages of Cycling (see item 1) and The C.T.C. Gazette. In these letters, Walker discusses, in a florid hand, his cycling life and illustrations (mostly behind him at this point), American writers, Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Bill Bryson, classic bikes, Alex Moulton, Cycling magazine, touring with kids, Stewart Edward White, the Federation of Cycling Old-Timers, etc. This includes a six-page letter that answers a couple dozen interview questions that ran in issue 10 of On The Wheel, seven photocopies of Walker’s touring articles from the 1950s and ‘60s (some of which were reprinted in OTW), and ten color photos, mostly of bicycles, from a recent tour that is mentioned in the 2 Sept. 1999 letter. A rather fun and free-wheeling look (pun intended) into the life of a professional artist and avid cyclist. (os)
