“Ted Smith … Bicycle Champion” Press Photo. Chicago: Acme Newspictures, Inc., 20 Aug., 1945. Press photo, 15.4cm by 20.3cm. Very good with some light scratches and a remnant of some paper in the lower margin. Agency stamps, wax pencil and caption glued on verso: “Champion Amateur Cyclist. CHICAGO – Ted Smith, 17, of Buffalo, N.Y., Cycling Club, who won senior men’s title in national Amateur Bicycle championships under auspices of Amateur Bicycle League of America in renewal of events after 4-yr. lapse because of the war.” From the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, of which Smith was inducted in 1991: “Ted was the Amateur Bicycling League of America Champion in 1945 (the youngest champion to date), 1947 and 1948. He was a member of the 1948 Olympic team. He raced in Belgium in 1950 as a professional becoming the first US rider to race in the World's Pro Road Race Championships.”
