Smith was also a prominent book collector who competed with the likes of Henry Huntington and John Pierpont Morgan. When Smith sold his collection at the outbreak of World War I, it went to A.S.W. Rosenbach, a collection that, according to Dickinson, Rosenbach used to “launch his career.” This bibliography describes Smith’s varied collection. Dickinson, p. 289.
