Evans, H.W. The Public School Problem in America: Outlining fully the policies and the program of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan toward the Public School System. NP: K.K.K., 1924. Staple-bound brochure, 8.9 by 20.4 cm, 25 pp. Very good with a few spots of foxing and uneven yellowing on the back cover only. Evans, then Imperial Wizard of the K.K.K., lays out his support of a free, public school system, free of any industrial, economic, political, or religious propaganda, in an attempt to rid America of Catholic influence and, therefore, Vatican rule. This brochure is the pinnacle of feel-good Klan propaganda: “Let Americans get together – This country contains no element that will not be richly and increasingly benefitted by the development of public schools, nor any element that will not be injured, financially, socially, and spiritually, through a failure to adopt such a program. All that being true, and it is true beyond dispute, every element in America, Protestant and Catholic, should stop fighting each other and unite for the accomplishment of a correct and adequate public school system.” (eph)
