[Che Guevara] Wire Photo of Che Guevara at United Nations. NP: Associated Press, December 10, 1964. Wire photo, 25.4 by 20.5 cm. Very good with light spotting and Che’s name and date on verso. Caption reads: “NEW YORK, Dec. 10 -- DISTINGUISHED ON U.N. CHOW LINE -- Major Ernesto Che Guevara, bearded Cuban Minister of Industry who wears a green fatigue uniform, waits his turn to choose his lunch in the cafeteria at U.N. headquarters in New York today. He later joined others of the Cuban delegation at a table. Guevara, who is scheduled to speak tomorrow in the General Assembly, was asked by a newsman if the U.N. could do anything to improve Cuban-U.S. relations. He replied, ‘Nothing.’” The following day Che delivered an impassioned speech condemning the U.N. for their inaction in dealing with the “brutal policy of apartheid” in South Africa and spoke out against the United States for their treatment of black Americans, “Those who kill their own children and discriminate daily against them because of the color of their skin; those who let the murderers of blacks remain free, protecting them, and furthermore punishing the black population because they demand their legitimate rights as free men—how can those who do this consider themselves guardians of freedom?” $35.00
