[Leon Trotsky] Press Photo, Attempt to Assassinate Leon Trotsky Fails. Dallas: Newspaper Enterprise Association, May 25, 1940. Press photo, 23 by 17.6 cm. Very good with light rippling from the caption label affixed to verso. A photograph of two prints; Trotsky, and a view of his nephew’s bedroom. The caption reads: “ATTEMPT TO ASSASSINATE TROTSKY FAILS / MEXICO CITY, MEXICO .. Left: Damage done by an incendiary bomb in the bedroom of Leon Trotsky’s nephew in suburban Mexico City. A group of around 20 men scaled the walls of the estate and fired about 200 rounds from a machine gun in to the room where the former Russian leader and his wife were asleep and then hurled fire-bombs into the home. Trotsky smothered the blaze which started in the cabinet in his nephew’s room with a blanket. Right: Leon Trotsky explains to reporter Martinez Mancera, on right, how the attack occurred. Trotsky claimed the plot was engineered by Josef Stalin and Russian Communists in Mexico.” $40.00
