New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc., 1968. First Trade. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Wasson, R. Gordon. Soma: Divine Mushroom of Immortality. New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc., 1968, first trade printing. Hardcover with dust jacket, 7 by 9 7/8-inches, xiii, 380 [1] pp. Blue cloth with bright gilt spine titles, twenty-two color images on seventeen plates, ten illustrations in the text, and four maps and charts. The hardcover is fine, the unclipped jacket is near fine with faint yellowing, a hint of edge wear, and a crease on the front flap. From the front flap: “One of the key enigmas of cultural history has been the identity of a plant called SOMA in the ancient Aryan religion. It was at once a plant, the inebriating juice of that plant, and an important god of the Aryans. Many half-hearted guesses have been advanced but none of them have enlisted support from specialists of the Vedic religion. Mr. Wasson has now arrested the attention of learned circles by advancing, and documenting, the thesis that SOMA was a mushroom, the fly-agaric, Amanita muscaria, an hallucinogenic mushroom that until recent times has been the center of the shamanic performance among the Uralic and Paleo-Siberian tribesmen of Siberia. He throws abundant light on the role of mushrooms in religious ritual – a field of study of which he is the noted pioneer.” First published as a quarter-leather, slipcased limited edition, this is a beautifully preserved first trade edition. Dust jacket present. First Edition.
