Book Plates by Frederick Garrison Hall (Bookplates, Ex Libris)

By: Hall, Frederick Garrison; R. Clipston Sturgis Jr., intro.

Price: $65.00

Quantity: 1 available

Book Condition: Very Good

Tan paper over boards with an ivory paper spine, paper cover label, 15.2 by 22.6, copperplate frontis, 5 p. intro followed by 24 leaves printed recto only with 24 beautifully reproduced bookplates, printed in black or dark red, and one copperplate; 7 blank leaves at the back, presumably to mount additional bookplates by Hall. Very good with light bumping to the lower corners, darkening on the spine, minor yellowing on the endpapers, and an upper-corner crease to the leaf between the half-title and frontis. Despite the tissue guard between the frontis and title page, there is some light offsetting on the frontispiece. While a different format than the Troutsdale Brochures (see item nos. 55-62), this is a lovely showcase of Hall’s engraved bookplates, including some of his intricate nautical-themed plates and decorative plates. As Mr. Sturgis writes, “Mr. Hall’s plates have a place of their own among the foremost productions of the day. Both in conception and in execution they are notable.” Fuller, p. 60.
