Stab-bound wraps, printed cloth over card covers with a paper title label on the front cover, 15 by 21 cm, [xiix] 591 pp., “889 illustrations.” Wear to the edges and corners of the wraps and wear and peeling to the papers at the head and tail of the spine; there is evidence of a label that has been removed from the lower spine (see image); and the string in the stab binding has a couple of breaks and it looks like there have been at least two home repairs. The leaves are yellowed, but not brittle. Originally published in three volumes, this combined edition describes everything a Westerner may want to know about his Japanese hosts, including a history of the Japanese flag, Japanese heroes, arts, poetry, superstitions, customs, festival, religions, drama and theatre, sports and games, flowers, names of the years (Year of the Rat, etc.), fine arts and porcelains, industry, clothing, rickshaws, and much, much more.
