Shell Fire: The Bombardment of Paris by the German Long Range Gun and the Great German Offensives of 1918 [Paris Gun]

By: Miller, Henry W.

Price: $400.00

Quantity: 1 available

Book Condition: Very Good

Leather-like burgundy cloth with dulled gilt spine and cover titles, 22 by 28 cm, 239 xi pp., illustrated with 37 maps and illustrations of gun placements, 24 pages of black and white images, and four mounted glossy black and white photographs, two showing images of Paris and Montmartre, and two showing the locations of air bombs and projectiles in Paris. This scarce first-hand account of World War I appears to have been printed with a mimeograph on heavy paper with the text and maps in blue. I’m not sure if this was printed in an effort to obtain a publisher, or simply a self-published book, but a version of this work was later published under the title The Paris Gun (Cape and Smith, 1930). Chapters include: The First Offensive, Paris Under Shell Fire, March 23, 1918; The Bombardment Continues; The Long Range Guns; The Second Bombardment, The Marne Offensive; The Beaumont Battery, The Second Bombardment; The Third and Last Great Offensive, The Third Bombardment; and The Great Retreat, The Fourth Bombardment. Includes reproductions of military communiques, and appendices with a 1918 calendar of events, a chart of casualties of the bombardment of Paris; “General Data on the Gun, Carriage, Shells, Base and Emplacements,” and a bibliography. An in-depth, day-by-day account.
