Blue cloth with dulled gilt spine titles and blindstamped cover decorations, 12 by 18.7 cm, 278 [1] pp. Fair with rubbing to the boards and spine, light wear to the corners, and heavy wear to the head and tail of the spine; there are pencil notations on the front endpapers and a bookseller’s mark on the front pastedown. It appears as if a leaf between the ffep and half-title has been removed, as has a publisher’s catalog bound at the rear, leaving only remnants in the gutter (see image). There is a dampstain along the top edge of the last leaf and rear free endpaper only. Allston (1779-1843) was an American painter and poet from South Carolina. This book, a romance set in Italy, was his only novel.
