Sewn, glossy wraps, 23.3 by 30.8 cm, [23] pp., illus. in color and black and white, signed print laid in (see below). Very good with light wear to the wraps including a crease to the upper corner of the front cover and an 8 mm edge tear on the back cover and last leaf. While the text is in French, there are single-page translations at the back in Dutch, English, and German. René Carcan (1925-1993) was a prominent Belgian engraver and sculptor, who studied under Léon Devos, Jacques Maes and Johnny Friedlaender. He has been shown in numerous international exhibitions including Galerie La Proue, and is closely associated with the work of Graciela Rodo Boulanger, who was also in the Friedlaender school […] He developed an artistic style which has been compared to Henri Matisse's, of distilling a vision to an essential essence. His use of colour was influenced by Wassily Kandinsky and by Paul Klee.”1 Carcan’s “love of man and nature, of man in nature, is celebrated […] throughout all his drawings, his water-colours and his engravings; marvels of reflection, sensitivity and discreet emotions.” It appears this volume was issued in an edition of 350 copies. Bound between the front cover and halftitle are two stiff blank leaves, between which is laid an original signed print by Carcan, numbered 326/350. This striking print, titled “Esperance” (Hope), measures 22.4 by 30.6 cm, and is in fine condition. Scarce.
