Brown cloth with bright gilt spine titles and black cover titles with a bright gilt image of Dow, 15. 8 by 23.6 cm, frontis portrait, xii 769 pp., illus. A very nice copy with minor wear at the corners and some light spotting on the back cover, remnants of a bookplate on the front pastedown, and a 1948 gift inscription on the second free endpaper. Laid in at the back is a 1973 newspaper clipping of the Dow mansion in Portland and taped onto one of the rear blank leaves is a 1973 clipping about the discovery of an unknown Dow tombstone. An in-depth autobiography of Neal Dow, (1804-1897), American politician and temperance advocate whose Maine Law of 1851 presaged national prohibition in the United States (Britannica).
